There used to be two greens in Honley
Updated: Jul 31
There used to be two bowling greens in Honley and now there are none. We have Honley Cons joining our 6-Man League once we get over the pandemic but they cannot bowl in the village as there isn't a green. They have arranged to use the Lowerhouses green as their base. It seems a shame that such a large village with a great sporting history no longer has a bowling green of its own.
The two bowling greens that were based in the village are both long gone but the memories and the records linger on.
Green 1 was at Hope Bank Pleasure Resort.
The leisure complex situated between Woodhead Road and New Mill Road included formal gardens, boating lake, bandstand, switchback railway, miniature cycle track and bowling green. The Ordnance Survey maps from 1932 (below), 1947 and 1950 clearly show the bowling green and other facilities whilst the green at Brockholes can be seen to the right across the New Mill Road.

Green 2 was at the Liberal Club off Cuckoo Lane.
As well as Hope Bank there was a green off Cuckoo Lane in the centre of the village at the Liberal Club (see map of 1918 below). It was still marked on a map from 1932 but was not marked on the 1948 or 1950 versions although the footprint still appears to be in place on both maps.
