False start to first season
Just when we thought we had reached the promised land the British weather interferes and both greens have standing water causing the postponement today of all matches in our opening day programme.
A heavy deluge in the hour before start time meant it was too late to stop bowlers travelling but it was clear on arrival that the standing water, the persistent rain and forecast of no easing up for some while left the two clubs with no option but to call the matches off much to the relief of most of the bowlers. Earlier today I posted the story of the formation of the Winter League relating the problems incurred along the way, we now have another one to add to that list.
Feedback is that a number of bowlers were happy not to bowl in the heavy rain but everyone should remember that this is a Winter League and there will be times when conditions are far from ideal when we would expect the matches to go ahead. On this occasion the greens had standing water and were not fit to bowl on and the clubs could have caused some damage to them by playing on them in that condition. The right decisions were made. Just a reminder that the condition of the green determines when and if a match is postponed, we do not postpone matches because it is raining or very cold. Sorry, but that is what Winter bowling is all about.
All the postponed first day matches have been rescheduled for Tuesday 5 January 2021 which was a free date in our calendar.
