I was sad to learn from the BCGBA newsletter that Joan passed away a few months ago. She had a wealth of knowledge of the rules and so was a great help to me when, as Secretary of Outlane BC, I had to act as referee whenever there was a dispute during a match there. This happened in all league matches at the Club, not only HDVBA's, and also in competitions, including Yorkshire competitions.
The most frequent argument was whether or not a bowler had set a mark, or was short. Her email to me on that was not only precise and correct but was humorous as well; this meant that when I "passed judgement" her humour defused any row. I'll post it here if I still have it, in case it helps bowlers here (not that there are such arguments nowadays!). I was also sad to learn that her husband Alan had passed away some months earlier.
What great contributors to HDVBA - they'll be sorely missed.
